In the 19th century, Batik, an ancient trade, was imported to West Africa from Indonesia where it originates. When African men known as “Belanda Hitam” (Malay for ‘Black Dutchman’) returned from Indonesia - they had been slaves serving as soldiers for the Dutch - they brought back tales of the vibrant fabrics adorned with patterns which told stories for generations. To this day Batik has remained a staple of West African textiles. In Ghana, you will find the technique being used to decorate anything from fashion to interiors to accessories to art.

In our Scout-approved Batik Workshop experience you will have the chance to make your very own one-of-a-kind fabric from scratch. You'll learn the history of Batik in Ghana from experienced artisans while selecting your fabric and pattern. Then, it’s over to you - roll up your sleeves and apple the wax to your fabric using traditional techniques. This is your chance to get your creative juices flowing!
